Rethinking journalism standards in the era of post-truth politics: from truth keepers to truth mediators

In this article, we argue for a pragmatic understanding of the role news media and journalism not as truth keepers but mediators in public sphere. current debate on ‘post-truth politics’ emphasis is often put formulation ethical guidelines legal solutions to regain control over ‘unbound journalism’ or re-establish media. Instead holding journalists individually accountable spread fake news, consider an unstable outcome fact-finding, information-seeking contestation, where act professional brokers. Journalists are individuals that closer facts more devoted than others. They rather embedded field practices help establish value information trusted way becomes acceptable convincing majority. Standards procedures can therefore be applied detect absolute defend it against falsehood, approach most reliable way. The then (unstable) democratically necessary procedure critical facilitated by journalists.
